There’s a phrase I find myself returning to often:

Everyone is a little bit right.

Not in a relativistic, anything-goes way.

In the lived sense of having moved through enough cultures, systems, and value sets to recognize how often people’s perspectives make sense within their context.

And how often those contexts collide.

I’ve lived the first half of my life through a first-generation Filipina American lens.

The second half through something more layered:
Filipina.
American.
Asian.
Spanish.
European.

Each context taught me something different about work, family, boundaries, ambition, care, conflict, and belonging.

And each one is — at least partially — right.

This is where the edge shows up for me.

Not as confusion.

But as constant discernment.

In micro-moments:

Do I prioritize harmony or directness here?
Do I soften, translate, or stay firm?
Do I lead with authenticity as I experience it — or attune more closely to the person in front of me?

None of these questions have a single right answer.

And answering them — again and again — is quietly exhausting.

This is the part expat narratives often miss.

We talk about adaptation like it ends.
Like once you’ve learned the rules, the tension resolves.

But after enough time living across systems, the challenge isn’t learning how to belong.

It’s learning how not to disappear while belonging.

Because when everyone is a little bit right, you can start to lose your internal reference point.

You can overthink.
Over-translate.
Over-accommodate.

You can confuse flexibility with self-erasure.

And still call it “being culturally competent.”

This is why I say the edge is not a problem to solve.

It’s not something to optimize away.

It’s a constant negotiation between:
Authenticity and attachment.
Self-definition and connection.
Holding your values while staying in relationship.

There is no final setting where this becomes effortless.

What I’m learning — slowly — is that the work here isn’t resolution.

It’s tolerating uncertainty without abandoning yourself.

Letting multiple truths exist without forcing yourself to contort around them.

Allowing some friction to remain.

This is the practice I’m moving toward as I begin my CPCAB counselling training.

Not choosing the “right” version of myself.
Not collapsing into the room.
Not hardening into isolation.

But staying present at the edge long enough to notice:

Where do I end?
Where do you begin?
And what kind of connection is actually possible here?

If you’re reading this and recognizing the fatigue of constant discernment —

You’re not failing at integration.

You’re living a reality that requires more nuance than most people are taught to hold.

This space is for practicing that holding.
Without solutions.
Without simplification.

Just staying with it.

Let’s keep walking the edges together.

Onward,
Kay ✨

Tell me about your in-between in the comments. (I read every one — and I suspect the rest of us will recognize ourselves in your story.)

Sometimes it helps to have that experience witnessed; you don’t have to make sense of it alone:

I hold a small number of Expat Orientation Conversations each month — 60‑minute, one‑to‑one, non‑clinical sessions for sense‑making and orientation, not therapy or coaching.

Together we look at how long‑term life abroad may be shaping your inner experience, find language for what has been hard to name, and gently sort what’s contextual from what’s personal before you decide what, if anything, you want to do next.

Who’s behind Edgewalkers Collective?

I’m Kay — Filipina American TCK (Third Culture Kid), 17 years in Spain, and a counsellor‑in‑training (CPCAB, UK). I spent over a decade working in inclusion and cross‑cultural strategy, helping organizations bridge cultures. I was good at it. I was also quietly burning out from being the bridge. Now I’m training to offer something different: recognition‑based support for expats and global citizens who are done being told they should feel lucky to be here.

If you’d like a sense of what working together could look like, you can read more on the Work With Me page.
If you want to access to the guided audios and quarterly pattern reports from my long-term life abroad research I send to paid subscribers, you‘re welcome to upgrade your subscription at any time.
